Wildlife, clean water, forests, fields and hilltops are vital parts of Jericho’s rural character and prosperity, and are highly valued by residents. Jericho’s Conservation Commission (CC) and Planning Commission (PC) worked together to make sure Jericho’s important natural heritage isn’t lost and that it will be here for future generations of residents. They developed updates to Jericho’s Land Use Regulations that protect Jericho’s natural resources in the form of a Natural Resources Overlay (NRO) district.
After 2 years of community engagement, the Natural Resources Overlay was approved and incorporated into the Land Use Regulations!

On April 11, 2019 the Planning and Conservation Commission received an award from the Vermont Planners Association for their combined efforts on the Natural Resources Overlay District. Several PC and CC members, along with other Jericho friends attended the awards reception at the Statehouse in Montpelier. Next time you're in Town Hall come and see the award!

The Town began in earnest seeking for ways to protect its natural Resources. Beginning in 1998, with the first Natural Resources Overlay was included in the Land Use Regulations, protecting deer wintering areas, several natural areas and natural communities and scenic areas.
Town Plan Amendment and Approval Process

Throughout 2015 the Planning Commission amended the Town Plan with the help of many from the community, including the Conservation Commission. The Conservation Commission in particular revised the Natural Resources Chapter to include the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Conservation Areas. The Town Plan, including the Conservation Areas, was approved by the Selectboard in January 2016.

In 2017 and 2018 the Planning Commission and Conservation Commission began once again in earnest collaborating together to update the NRO based on the work done in the Science to Action Project as well as the updated maps and data in the 2016 Town Plan.
The Public participated in many meetings to help craft the NRO.
